Yousry Sharif Workshops & Gala Show

Please join us for an exciting weekend with one of Egypt’s belly dance legends. In 1980, Yousry Sharif came to New York City to perform as a member of Nagwa Fouad’s touring show. Spotted by the keen eye of Ibrahim Farrah, he was invited to stay and teach and dance in New York. Today, Yousry still resides in New York, however he spends a large portion of his time traveling and teaching. Yousry’s own school, the Egyptian Academy of Oriental Dance, is based in Yousry’s unique style and expert articulations. A master of the taktib, his style and technique is no longer just “folkloric” – though those “traditions” dictate his evolutions and remain the foundation of his choreographic ingenuity. Middle East Arts International is proud to presents the legendary Yousry Sharif in a full weekend of workshops, October 3 - 5, 2008. Capping this great weekend will be MEAI's annual Gala Theater Show, featuring Cassandra of Minnesota, Students of Yousry, and local artists.

The Gala Show

We are currently working on putting together the finest Gala Show possible to celebrate our weekend with Yousry. While our show is still in the works, we can tell you that the lineup is looking pretty spectacular! MEAI will be presenting Cassandra of Minnesota, Yousry's students, MEAI Dance Co. and a number of top regional dancers and musicians. The show will celebrate Egyptian folkloric and classical Oriental dance, as well as the many influences found in Yousry's body of works.
