Our Beginnings
Middle East Arts International (MEAI) was founded in 1997 by Tina Sargent, Anita Ross (aka Sabura) and Souzan Seshima. The organization grew out of a desire to have a greater variety of high quality workshops and shows of Middle Eastern dance and to present Middle Eastern dance and music to the broader Seattle community in professional, theatrical settings. Since then, the organization has produced nearly a dozen shows and over 25 workshops as well as formed a professional performing group, the MEAI Dance Company. Instructors and performers have come from Egypt, Iran, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Iowa, Utah, Oregon, California, Florida and Washington.
Since MEAI began, the dance and music scene in Seattle has changed drastically. Now there are dozens of workshops each year and events all across the Pacific Northwest. Those currently working with Middle East Arts International are grateful to the organization’s founders, original Board, and volunteers for their vision and dedication. We hope to carry the dream forward for many years to come.
